Principal Engineer - Hypervisors, Backup & UNIX Systems
PayNet
Why PayNet / Why Now
- Build the infrastructure behind Malaysia’s national payments network, powering rails Malaysians use daily, including DuitNow, FPX, JomPAY, and MyDebit.
- Operate at true national scale (PayNet reports 8.44B transactions processed in 2025), where architecture decisions materially affect uptime, speed, and trust.
- Join a public-good operator that reinvests surplus back into making the country’s payment infrastructures more resilient, competitive, and accessible.
- Step in at an inflection point: PayNet has been shifting from legacy/private connectivity toward internet-based API connectivity and a cloud-based computing model, raising the bar for security and platform engineering.
TL; DR
- Own the future-state infrastructure architecture behind Malaysia’s most critical payment rails.
- Lead large‐scale virtualization, automation, and migration initiatives with national impact.
- Work on always‐on, mission‐critical systems where your decisions truly matter.
- Combine deep technical ownership with long‐term platform strategy.
Why This Role Matters
- Malaysia’s core payment systems depend on resilient, low‐latency infrastructure at scale.
- Infrastructure decisions here directly affect availability, security, and public trust.
- This role reduces systemic risk while enabling growth, innovation, and automation.
- Strong architecture leadership now prevents outages, bottlenecks, and technical debt later.
What You Will Actually Do
- Own and shape PayNet’s future‐state infrastructure architecture across compute, storage, virtualization, and backup.
- Design and operate highly available, low‐latency virtualization platforms supporting mission‐critical payment systems.
- Lead multi‐year migrations of core services (e.g., DuitNow, FPX, JomPAY) with minimal disruption.
- Build automation frameworks that enable repeatable, secure, and scalable infrastructure operations.
- Drive observability and performance management to ensure capacity, reliability, and uptime.
- Act as technical lead across deployment, integration, and cross‐functional infrastructure initiatives.
Examples of This Role in Practice
- Designing a new virtualization platform and migrating live payment services without customer impact.
- Automating patching and hardening across hundreds of servers to reduce operational risk.
- Diagnosing performance bottlenecks during peak transaction periods and resolving them permanently.
- Partnering with security and network teams to implement resilient, compliant infrastructure designs.
- Proactively scaling infrastructure ahead of national usage spikes or regulatory changes.
What Will Help You Succeed
Required
- Strong hands‐on experience with RedHat Linux and Windows Server in production environments.
- Proven ability to design and deploy highly available virtualization platforms from the ground up.
- Experience automating infrastructure using tools like Ansible, Chef, or Puppet.
- Practical experience with enterprise platforms such as Active Directory, DNS, LDAP, Jenkins, Terraform, and monitoring tools.
Helpful
- Certifications such as RHCE or LPIC demonstrating advanced Linux expertise.
- Experience in financial services or telecommunications with strict uptime and security requirements.
- Exposure to AWS or GCP, particularly in hybrid infrastructure environments.
- Familiarity with modern CI/CD, monitoring, and logging stacks (e.g., Grafana, Prometheus, ELK).
