Senior Research Fellow / Research Fellow (X-Ray Facilities)

Nanyang Technological University

  • NTU Main Campus, Singapore
  • Full-time

FACTS is NTU's central shared facility specialising in characterisation using electron microscopy and X-ray techniques. FACTS invites applications for the position of Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow. The role will focus on

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for running of X-ray diffraction/scattering and/or X-ray fluorescence/photoemission spectroscopy instruments and support users in terms of training, consultation, usage, etc, so as to enable a broad user base to use the machines efficiently and safely.
  • Conduct maintenance on the above machines, liaising with vendor engineers and trouble-shooting regular problems and issues.
  • A strong knowledge of X-ray diffraction and scattering concepts. With knowledge and experience of advanced quantitative Rietveld, in-situ measurements and PDF analysis. A good understanding of principles in X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (photoelectric effect, electron attenuation factor, chemical shifts, spin-orbit splitting, surface charging and neutralization, significance of differential charging, depth profiling and angle-resolved technique). Understand surface charging and apply appropriate sample mounting technique for various types of samples. Able to perform spectral and quantitative analyses on XPS data.
  • Deliver courses on X-ray diffraction and/or X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. These range from single lecture through to multi-day, in-depth courses that take users from beginners through to advanced.
  • Organise, lecture and provide support for those users, in collaboration with external vendors.
  • Provide consultancy for various ongoing university projects on the subjects of crystal chemistry and crystallography. Write up experimental reports and paper sections in accordance to the work done.
  • Fulfil any other assigned duties as needed.

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a closely related discipline with more than 4 years of experience.
  • Strong expertise in crystallography, including single-crystal diffraction, powder diffraction, and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis.
  • Proven experience in advanced quantitative structure analysis, including Rietveld refinement, in situ/operando diffraction studies, and total scattering/PDF techniques.
  • Proficiency in data interpretation, scientific reporting, and presenting research findings to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment.
